Diary of Faces Week 7

This week in Diary of Faces class we studied a South African artist by the name of Irma Stern.  I choose this portrait of a sweet little girl.

Diary of Faces

Diary of Faces week 6!  The portrait is by Georgi Mashev of Bulgaria.  Much easier to do than the previous weeks with all those harsh shadows.  Her hat is not quite right but I liked her so left her looking a bit Man in the Yellow Hat-ish.

Diary of Faces #5

It was Diary of Faces week #5 and this week was Italian artist Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931).

His original

My Diary of Faces version

Also worked on this portrait for this week.  I love the folk art feel to it.  I also put a ton of wax over it which always makes me fall in love with a painting!

Here is the final version of this piece from a couple of weeks ago.  Still not totally loving it but she's growing on me.

Thanks for looking!

Christian Krohg and a WIP

Week 3 of Diary of Faces!  This week was Christian Krohg (b. 1852 d. 1925) of Norway.  I took on a big challenge and chose a piece that had lots of elements going on.  I generally try and avoid hands and ears at all costs but thought I'd live wild and free this week!

A WIP, I think she is looking pretty cute!

Happy PPF!

Diary of Faces

It was week 2 for a Diary of Faces class and I'm loving it so far!  I'm finding it absolutely freeing to not have to worry about the creative part and just learn about sketching and drawing while trying to recreate these wonderful works.  This weeks is a portrait entitled Head of a Woman by Nicolae Grigorescu who was a Romanian painter.

Here is his captivating original:

and now my painting:

Here is a WIP that I am truthfully having troubles with.  I liked her a lot at first but lost my way and now am ready to have her visit the trash bin!  Maybe she'll just rest on a shelf facing the wall for a while instead.

Wonder Woman and a new class

First up is a 12x24 collaged canvas.  I was feeling a bit patriotic and felt inspired to do this.  I really quite like her although as I was going along I  started to feel like I was beginning to paint Wonder Woman.  Oh, well I like Wonder Woman - maybe it was a calling from those UnderRoo wearing days.

Next up is the first portrait for a class called Diary of Faces taught by the wonderful Sharon Tomlinson.  It is a self portrait by artist Georgette Chen.  First is the original:

Then is my sketch of the original.  Not too bad I don't think!

Then things fell apart a bit when I went to paint her!  It was still fun though and I learned a lot already.

Happy Paint Party Friday!
